Buying A Domain Name?
I was wondering if my name would be to long. I’m planning on starting up an online portfolio for my designs, and I would need to buy a domain name. I counted and its 17 characters(letters) long. Is this too much, I want something decently easy to remember and type in. Any types or recommendations?
Also, I think a nickname would be to unprofessional.

Most registrars allow up to 67 characters for a domain name.
If you need to create an online portfolio you need both hosting and a domain name.
I recommend one of these: http://www.hosttell.com/
Powweb has the best offer right now. It’s on a 50% sale – $3.88/month ($46.56/year), and you get a free domain name from them.
Keep your domain name:
- As short as possible
- Easy to remember
- Without dashes. Don’t use micro-soft.com if microsoft.com is already taken. Your potential customers will only end up at the one without the dash.
- Don’t think a .com domain is the only option. There are MANY more. The extension makes NO difference to the search engines. Have a look at http://www.top5hosting.com/domainapp.htm. Click on the Register a new domain link and play around with names. Nice thing with these guys is that you will get 1000mb free hosting included with your domain name. So no monthly hosting accounts.
Don’t trust any cheap service, many of them don’t allow you to have full control on your domain name. If you’re going to buy domain names, http://www.goldpuma.com/domain is the lowest cost service which is full-featured and really works for you ($9.99 /year). They offer free extras with every domain name:
Quick Blogcast
Hosting with Web site builder
Personalized Email Account
Starter Web Page For Sale/ Parked Page
Domain Forwarding
Domain Masking
100-Pack Email Forwarding
Total DNS Control
Change of Registration
Status Alerts
Domain Locking
…
As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.
If you want to start your website I recommend purchase your domain and hosting together. In this way it is possible to get your domain for free. Some hosting services offer this gift today.
As an experienced webmaster I recommend BlueHost service which I’m sure it would work for you and fulfill all your requirements. They have a really great offer for hosting & I have used them for over 3 yrs now, and have never had a single problem with them.
They are a Multi-awarded Web Hosting which offer a Full-featured service only $6.95. You can see their Plan Details accompanied with reliable reviews regarding their service at:http://www.threehosts.com/reviews/1st

Good Luck!
I assume you know you don’t need your actual name for a domain name? Sorry, but obvious questions first. Anyway, you want to avoid long, complicated domain names, and instead go for uncomplicated, simple, short domain. Maybe even crazy, so everyone remembers, eg. http://www.google.com, or wikipedia.org. These are sites we heard about, but what on earth is a Google? Some crazies are really popular websites. Nobody seems to know of a searchengine.com or similar, hmm? (Although it is a real search engine site!!)
You should try to avoid exceedingly long domain names, unless they are memorable (ex. letmygooglethatforyou.com). Instead, abbreviate your webpage title. For example, if the name is, say, JohnDoe’sArtisticPortfolio, you could use jdartportfolio.
if i were going to your site. i would be looking for the product that you are selling.. keep it simple but on target for the product..
I mean I don’t think it would be too bad, how hard is your name to spell, anyways?
i think the max is somewhere around 30+ charecters.
And what ever you do dont use CiHOST.com for your webhost.
