Dear friend, you can’t buy a domain name forever. you should know that even google and yahoo websites have not bought their domain names forever and they have no way but to renew their domain names before expiring.
Some web hosting services mislead their visitors by saying this sentence “Domain forever”. But in fact this sentense means” as long as you use our web hosting service you can own this domain name.”
As you may know a domain name is just a name, not a real website. If you are going to create your website: 1- Buy a domain name. To get a domain name, you have to pay an annual fee to a registrar for the right to use that name. 2- Buy a web hosting service to provide your online space and enable you to get your website online at your purchased domain name.

You can certainly buy a domain name without web hosting but I guess that wouldn’t make sense unless you were to redirect that domain name to another site.
The company I use to get my domain AND hosting is http://www.1and1.com. They are really good and reliable. I’ve been with them for about 5 years now. They are also cheap. I spend $30 every three months for three domains. If you only want one domain, I believe it is $5 per month or something to that effect.
About the forever domain, well, you can also do that but I haven’t tried that route yet. However, I’ve had my domain http://www.melissamusic.com for almost ten years already. Guess I should look into that as well. Good luck!
